Narrowing down a favorite brunch item at Home Wine Kitchen (7322 Manchester Road, Maplewood; 314-802-7676) is like choosing a favorite child. Red wine braised pork belly versus crab-covered poached eggs? It's just not fair.

If one item is able to stand out from the crowded field of delicious brunch-time offerings, it's the shortbread sea-salt biscuit. Chef Cassy Vires shows she has mastered the art of baking with these perfect treats. The biscuits have a soft, fluffy interior and are always fresh-from-the-oven warm. The outside is different than the usual flaky biscuit fare. Vires' have a firm, smooth texture, almost like a shortbread cookie, that gives them a buttery crunch. A dusting of sea salt is a welcome savory complement to the accompanying housemade jam (watermelon on a recent visit). Home Wine Kitchen's biscuits make crawling out of bed on a Sunday morning worth the trouble.
