Every year, Wine Spectator gives out restaurant awards for wine lists at eateries around the country. There are three levels: the Award of Excellence, the Best of Award of Excellence and the Grand Award at the top.
There are 38 restaurants in Missouri that won awards, and 19 of those are located in St. Louis. Nobody won the top Grand Award, but five St. Louis restaurants won the Best of Award of Excellence. Congrats to 801 Chophouse (137 Carondelet Plaza; 314-875-9900), Annie Gunn's (16806 Chesterfield Airport Road, Chesterfield; 636-532-7684), Balaban's (1772 Clarkson Road, Chesterfield; 636-449-6700), Truffles (9202 Clayton Road, Ladue; 314-567-9100) and Gerard's Restaurant (1153 Colonnade Center, Des Peres; 314-821-7977). We named Balaban's the Best Wine List (Value) in last year's Best of St. Louis issue, but our pick for the Best Wine List (Price Be Damned), Elaia, wasn't named. To be fair, you have to apply for the award, and not all places do.
The rest of the St. Louis restaurants that won Awards of Excellence are: Eleven Eleven Mississippi (1111 Mississippi Avenue; 314-241-9999), Vin de Set (2017 Chouteau Avenue; 314-241-8989), Remy's Kitchen and Bar (222 S. Bemiston Avenue, Clayton; 314-726-5757), Lucas Park Grille (1234 Washington Avenue; 314-241-7770), 1904 Steakhouse (777 River City Casino Boulevard; 888-578-7289), Copia Urban Winery (1122 Washington Avenue; 314-241-9463), Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar (1855 South Lindbergh Boulevard; 314-567-7610), Mike Shannon's Steaks & Seafood (620 Market Street; 314-421-1540), Porter's Steakhouse (1000 Eastport Plaza Drive, Collinsville, Illinois; 618-345-2400), J. Buck's (1000 Clark Avenue; 314-436-0394) , the Wine Tap (223 E. Main Street, Belleville, Illinois; 618-239-9463), the Melting Pot (294 Lamp And Lantern Village, Chesterfield; 636-207-6358) and the Restaurant at the Cheshire (6300 Clayton Road; 314-647-7300).
