Art Saint Louis Kicks Off "Food, Glorious Food" With a Block Party and Food Trucks

Art St. Louis' (1223 Pine Street; 314-241-4810) newest exhibit will interest foodies and art lovers alike. Some 76 new works from 51 local artists will be on display and for sale, and they're all food and drink-inspired.

"Everybody eats and drinks! Everybody has a relationship with food one way or the other," Art Saint Louis executive director Chandler Branch tells us. "For some of these artists, I think it's just plain fun. For others food is a subject that's not without some serious social implications -- they may feel they want to address subjects like obesity, poverty, sustainability. It's all fair game."

The works are also all "dinner plate sized" and are all for sale, with a maximum price of $400. Branch says these things make the show more shopper-friendly and the subject matter makes it more relatable. As always, some works are more provocative, but overall, he says it's a celebration of food and drink.

"Food, Glorious Food" kicks off Saturday, July 26, with a block party at Art Saint Louis' (relatively) new digs, which also feature the only retail location of Mississippi Mud Coffee Roasters. Art Saint Louis moved to Pine Street last year. Branch calls the space an "unusual mix" of gallery and cafe, which of course lends itself well to the show.

The party starts Saturday at 4 p.m., with four food trucks: Bombay Food Junkies, Brazil Express, the Sweet Divine and Zia's. Four artists will be making art live, as well as two chalk artists -- you can contribute your own chalk design as well. The event is free, and so is the show during normal business hours.

"There are all these metaphorical connections between how we enjoy and consume art and food. Flavor, color and texture are all things that are part of eating and drinking as well. We saw that and played upon it," Branch says. "Plus I think St. Louis is a very food-friendly town. It doesn't seem like a stretch to invite people to come and enjoy themselves if there's great food involved."
