Sometimes, I just have to have a big, greasy burger -- one that covered in gooey cheese, tangy sauce and served on a soft buttery bun with crispy lettuce, red onions and some juicy tomatoes.

I never expected I'd find one to satisfy this craving at a vegetarian restaurant.

Small Batch Whiskey & Fare (3001 Locust Street; 314-380-2040), the latest feather in restaurateur Dave Bailey's cap, aims to make vegetarian food accessible to herbivores and meat-eaters alike. One way it attracts the carnivorous set is with its burger. In place of meat, the star of the sandwich is a deep-fried, sweet-corn fritter. The patty provides the grease, the black-bean salsa adds texture, and a dollop of creamy guacamole gives the burger its richness. The chef tops the burger with a traditional lettuce-tomato-onion garnish and some salty Chihuahua cheese, then slathers it with Bailey's "rooster sauce," a spicy mayonnaise.

Paired with a stiff whiskey cocktail, it's a meal fit for a cruelty-free cowboy.
