On June 14 Siam STL (4121 Manchester Avenue; 314-533-7426) held its grand opening, filling a void left by the closure of Novak's Bar & Grill -- arguably one of the Grove's best gay bars and nightlife destinations. The new concept for the neighborhood's longstanding hotspot is one-part lounge and dance club and one-part pan-Asian fusion restaurant.
Executive chef Tyler Davis, who previously served as the executive sous chef and pastry chef of Ernesto's Wine Bar (2730 McNair Avenue; 314-664-4511), cooks up a full menu of appetizers, salads, soups, sushi and, notably, elegantly plated desserts.
Pan-Asian melds nicely with American influences in dishes including chorizo-date pot stickers ($7), "Korean Fried Chicken (KFC)" ($9) and "Umami Sliders" ($3.25) made with ground sirloin, wild mushrooms, crispy shallots and tomato jam.
More substantial dishes include a kimichi hotpot ($10), with braised pork belly and housemade udon, as well as Siam specialty sushi rolls including the "Goku Roll" with fried shrimp tempura, red tuna, baked scallops and spicy crab.
Siam STL's current hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 4 p.m. to 3 a.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 a.m. Siam STL offers a happy hour from 4 to 7 p.m. daily with drink specials and half-price sushi. For more information, check out the Siam STL website or follow it on Facebook.
