The Place: Triumph Grill (3419 Olive Street; 314-446-1801)

The Hours: Happy hour is offered Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m., as well as Sunday from 4 p.m. till close. Late-night happy hour is served Monday through Thursday from 8 to 10 p.m. in the bar area only.

The Deal: $2 domestic bottles, $3 well drinks, $5 house red or white wine and $5 of all pitchers. Appetizer specials include nine different dishes for $5 apiece.

The Scene: Triumph Grill, located next to the Moto Museum across from Saint Louis University, is a full-service motorcycle-themed restaurant with a menu of American-style eats. Happy hour is restricted to the bar area, with seating available at a few dimly lit booths and tables away from the windows. The after-work crowd is a mild one, so if you're looking for a quiet place to unwind, this spot might do the trick.

The Food: Happy-hour appetizer specials include stuffed mushrooms, flash-fried asparagus, onion rings, smoked-salmon flatbread, wings, soft pretzels, buffalo chicken queso, housemade blue cheese kettle chips and calamari.

The whole stuffed mushroom caps get filled, battered and fried. Served with a garlic-Parmesan sauce, this indulgent dish was our favorite of the three we tried. Clearly, this happy-hour menu is a heavy one, not for the faint of heart.

The Verdict: At nearly half-off or more discounted from each dish, the price is right for snacking, but it wasn't enough to rev our engines. The buffalo chicken queso -- a blend of herbs and cream cheese with diced chicken breast and Louisana hot sauce -- didn't come out as hot and bubby as expected. It's certainly a large portion, but lacked spice and felt unwieldy after just a few bites.

The salmon flatbread didn't quite crisp up on the oven, leaving a topping of capers and red onion to overpower the crust and overall flavor.

At only five bucks a plate, these stick-to-your-insides appetizers are suitable for sharing over a beer or two, but we wouldn't recommend skipping dinner for it. Instead, roll up late night for that cheesy or fried food fix.
