We're still in a food coma from Iron Fork last night, but there are too many good events this weekend to stay home. Head down to Hermann for a German bonanza, or pick up the first of spring produce at one of many farmers' markets. Check out our food-related recommendations after the jump.
Friday (Mar. 21):
Start your weekend off right at the Contemporary Art Museum with a private tour before it opens. It's members-only, but maybe this is an excuse to become one! Enjoy complimentary coffee and breakfast plus a tour of the current exhibitions. Speak directly with the curators, who can answer all your questions. 8:30 a.m. Free to all museum members.
Wine and painting seem to be all the rage these days. Enjoy drinks and appetizers at Maggiano's while learning to paint, step-by-step. It's $55 per person, which includes all painting supplies, wine, appetizers and your beautiful painting. 7 p.m. Call 314-824-2410 to register.
Saturday (Mar. 22):
Hermann has a 170-year history of sausage-making. Learn how it's done via live demonstrations, enjoy traditional German music and dancing, a wurst competition, the Wiener Dog Derby and even a whole-hog sausage breakfast. Check out the full schedule here. Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. and Sunday, starting at 7:30 a.m. Tastings start at $8.
We are so excited that it's finally farmers' market season. Sure, Soulard goes year round, but the next few months will be filled with bright Saturday mornings and fresh, local produce. Hit the market from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the rear of 6655 Delmar Boulevard.
Strapped for cash? You can get healthy meals for $10 or less. Charlee McBride from the University of Missouri Extension will show you how to get and prepare fresh produce on the cheap. Plus, you'll tour the Walnut Park Community Garden and even pick up some free vegetables. From 1 to 3 p.m. Admission is free.
Sunday (Mar. 23):
Chaumette is well-known for its Sunday suppers, but brunch service debuted last week at the Grapevine Grill. Chef Adam Lambay will offer a different menu each week, plus staples like scrambled eggs, croissants and biscuits, sausage, and quiche. This week, the feature dish is shaved Meyer Farm Berkshire ham, grilled asparagus and Idaho potato gratin. Brunch is $20 per person, $10 for kids. Reservations are required; call 573-747-1000.
Bring out your inner artist with a little liquid courage. Enjoy the spring weather on Cielo's rooftop patio and learn to paint "Sunset Over Budding Vine" step-by-step. From 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. $38 per person; register here.
