Overview: If you're looking for a departure from Subway or Jimmy John's, look no further than Planet Sub. Sure, it's also a franchise, but at least it has roots a little closer to home -- it began in Lawrence, Kansas, as Yellow Sub and grew from there. Planet Sub has 45 sandwich choices, options inclusive of vegetarians and vegans alike. All of its bread is baked daily and is vegan. The sub shop has nine veggie sandwiches to choose from -- you can also sub any meats for tempeh.

Highlights: Planet Sub gave Gut Check a special tasting of four of its vegetarian subs. Clockwise from top right (all $5.49/$8.99): the veggie, pesto bello, tempeh parmesan and veggie grinder. One of Planet Sub's bestsellers, the pesto bello, is sure to delight any kind of eater: A six- or twelve-inch sub is packed with provolone, cheddar, roasted portobello mushrooms, red peppers, sun-dried tomatoes and tomato-garlic pesto. The combination of ingredients packs a punch for your taste buds.
