Don't stay snowed in this weekend! Get out and about (hopefully the roads will be safe and dry). Take your grandparents to tea or go on a grand tour of Ste. Genevieve's wineries. Or hey, just post up at the bar with a hot toddy to celebrate National Hot Toddy Day on Saturday. Check out our food-related recommendations after the jump.
Friday (Jan. 10):
Soulard Farmers' Market is still going strong and is without a doubt the largest and most eclectic market in the region -- you can buy everything from a sack of apples to a new pair of sunglasses. This is truly an iconic spot. The days and hours of operation are a bit confusing, though: Wednesday through Saturday, the Grand Hall, or the central inside shops, are open, along with a smattering of outside vendors (varies daily), from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the afternoon hours usually offering the best options.
Saturday (Jan. 11):
This afternoon is a perfect time to get your little one out of the house. Disney princesses will be there to enjoy formal tea with you as you snack on scones, pastries, tea sandwiches and hot cocoa. There's also a keepsake craft and princess photos -- plus tiaras! Tickets are $15 for adults and children. Reservations are required; call 314-942-3521. From 3 to 7 p.m.
Grab a commemorative tasting glass and eighteen two-ounce samples of Schlafly beers including the likes of Barleywine, Cyser, Sour Blonde and Cocoa Imperial Stout. Enjoy live music from the Foggy Memory Boys featuring Gary Hunt. Tickets cost $25 in advance, at either location, or get them online here. $30 at the door, if there are any left. From noon to 4 p.m.
"Daniel Drake works by day as a short order cook specializing in pancake artistry. By night, he's the mastermind behind the Psychedelic Psychonaut saga, an epic battle of weird good versus awful evil. Fans of the band the Psychedelic Psychonauts know that Drake has been writing a choose-your-own adventure story in the band's flyers since 2012. Now the tale of the honorable knight Gorgozord and the vile Zax is collected in Drake's first graphic novel, Gorgozord Vol. 1. The book goes on sale at 2 p.m. today at the mighty Star Clipper (6392 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-725-9110 or www.starclipper.com). Following the book launch party, Drake transforms into his heroic alter ego Dr. Dan the Pancake Man and demonstrates how he makes them crazy cakes. Bands the Future Transhumans and the Psychedelic Psychonauts play from 5 to 6 p.m. to round out the day. Admission is free, but bring your wallet to buy a book."
Wineries aren't just for summer. Wind your way through six of Ste. Genevieve's wineries on Saturday or Sunday (or both). You'll find each stop paired with some belly-warming soup. At Cave Vinyeards, it's dry red Norton with Italian wedding soup. Charleville Vineyard features Genevieve Rivard Sweet Chardonel with spicy Cajun chicken and andouille sausage gumbo. Enjoy peasant bread soup (a soup of bread, Swiss cheese and cream) paired with a 2010 Chambourcin at Chaumette Winery. At Sand Creek Winery you'll get a semi-dry vignoles and cream of wild mushroom soup, served with a toasted baguette. Stop by Sainte Genevieve Winery for a semi-dry white Ste. Gemme paired with chicken and rice soup and a buttered roll. Last but not least, there's Traminette dry wine and spicy and hearty Mexican soup at Twin Oaks Winery. Tickets are $27, available here. Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday (Jan. 12):
The Novel Cuisine series is basically a book club for food lovers: This week, read The Telling Room: A Tale of Love, Betrayal, Revenge, and the World's Greatest Piece of Cheese by Michael Paterniti. Then enjoy a cooking demonstration inspired by the book. You'll eat garlic mushrooms, Serrano ham, sheep's milk cheese with membrillo, paella with chorizo and rabbit and flan. Registration is $40 per person, available here. From 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Every Sunday night you can enjoy a feast of local produce and meats at Chaumette Winery in Ste. Genevieve. This week, it's French onion soup, romaine with Norton, Sunday evening pot roast with braised carrots and smashed Yukon potatoes with creme fraiche. $18 per person, $7.45 for kids twelve and under.
