The Veggielante is on a mission to spread the word about places to order good, meatless grub. Check out this week's pick.
Destination: Provalo Deli (229 W. Lockwood Avenue; 314-962-5500)
Neighborhood: Webster Groves
Cuisine: Italian deli
Overview: Provalo Deli -- "provalo" is Italian for "try it" -- is known for its pretzel bread buns. Owners Colleen Favazza and April Travers have been best friends since kindergarten, and one fateful day three years ago, decided to open an Italian deli. Their menu features more than a few vegetarian sandwiches for their customers.
Highlights: The pesto pretzel sandwich ($5.75) is served hot between two pieces of warm, soft pretzel bread. The filling is mozzarella and "Provalo" (not to be confused with Provel) cheeses, tomato, topped with pesto sauce. The garlic kick of the pesto pairs nicely with the homemade pretzel bread, creating a simple and light, yet entirely filling dish.
Another favorite is the veggie-oliva sandwich ($5.75), thick-cut mozzarella, cucumber, lettuce, tomato, red peppers and red onion, garnished with olive spread and Italian vinaigrette, served on French bread.
