Hoagie City Diner -- the eclectic home of American brunch, Korean bibimbap and hoagies -- is gone. It closed for good on September 30, though the owners announced it on their Facebook page back on September 21.
In its place is Jay B's Sandwiches, a new venture, which took over the space at 1730 Olive Street Tuesday. Jay B's owners Debra Millender and Jason Barnes gave us the scoop on what they hope to bring to St. Louis.
"We're bringing something different to the table -- a better product and a better product for the money," says Millender.

Jay B's claim to (future) fame is the half pound of meat it uses on all its sandwiches and chef salads. The menu offers lots of specials like the "Cardinal" (corned beef, pastrami, Swiss, lettuce, tomato, thousand island dressing) and the "Bluez" (corned beef, turkey, American cheese, lettuce and blue cheese). Millender and Barnes have known one another for about ten years, Barnes says. Opening Jay B's has been his dream after managing several fast-food restaurants.
"This has been a long time coming. I'm very, very passionate about people having good food," he says.
He notes that Jay B's sandwiches will be "the biggest around" and it will also offer delivery. Barnes and Millender plan to open November 1, and are aiming for multiple locations around St. Louis if Jay B's is a success. Barnes says future customers should check Jay B's Facebook page for updates.
