Happy Hump Day! Here's the cocktail that will get you through to Friday.
When in need of a stiff drink, walking into Dressel's (419 North Euclid Avenue; 314-361-1060) is a step in the right direction. Step to the skinny horseshoe-shaped bar and peruse the craft beer list -- short, but carefully selected. Fine bourbons and whiskeys line the wall, beckoning. Clearly we're in the right place.
The dim lighting and dark wood tables, wood chairs, wood everything, creates the exact ambiance you would expect in a Welsh pub. Framed portraits of writers and various intelligentsia cover the walls, and the complete lack of TVs makes it easy to converse with a drinking buddy or bend the ear of the bartender. Basically, it's one of the best spots to sit back and really appreciate a well-made drink.
Like many cocktail menus, Dressel's is about to make the transition from summer to fall and roll out their cold weather beverages. Barkeep Brandon Thomas even has a cask of barrel-aged Manhattans nearly ready to go. But the "Dark and Stormy" is a yearlong fan favorite, so we make the order.
As the glass slides across the bar, the dark clouds of Cruzan Black Strap Rum hover ominously above the bright mix of fresh lime juice and ginger beer, but after a few sips, the rum descends into the fizz. It makes for a perfect drink during this pleasant stretch of mild September weather (We'll save that cask of Manhattans for when we're freezing in a few more months). After imbibing, you'll have the strength to sail on to the end of the week.
Here's Thomas' recipe:
Dressel's "Dark and Stormy"
1 1/2 oz. Cruzan Black Strap Rum 1/2 oz. Fresh Lime Juice 6 oz. Fever-Tree Ginger Beer
Mix the lime juice and ginger, add the rum with a slice of lime.
