Local Harvest Grocery and Cafe (12309 Old Big Bend Road; 314-966-6566) in Kirkwood is closing after just ten months in business. The cafe's last day was Tuesday, August 6. The grocery will be open Thursday until Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with discounted merchandise.
Local Harvest Kirkwood opened in in October as an outpost of the original at 3108 Morganford Road in south city. There's also a downtown location at 810 Olive Street. Owners Maddie Earnest and Patrick Horine sent out a message on Tuesday announcing the closure.
"We enjoyed our all too brief experience in Kirkwood, meeting new people, building new relationships, and planting the seed of local foods in a great community," the statement said.
The market was housed in a 6,000 square foot space and the cafe sat 40 people; there was also a full-service deli with local and sustainable meats and cheeses. The downtown location, which opened last June, also has a cafe, and Earnest and Horine invited customers to join them there. The Kirkwood location will close for good Sunday, August 11 at 6 p.m.
"We thank all of our patrons and friends who supported us, and everyone who pitched in to help us build the store and keep it going," they said in the statement. "Thank you, Kirkwood and St Louis County. We will miss you!"
