Missouri Botanical Garden Celebrates Sustainable Farms



2013 is the year of food at the Missouri Botanical Garden (4344 Shaw Boulevard, 314-577-9400), and all summer its Foodology event will celebrate edibles instead of flowers. This week, the Garden is screening the second movie in its Chipotle Film Series, GROW!

The 2012 documentary follows twelve Georgia farms helmed by independent young farmers through an entire growing season. GROW! also spotlights the trend of college-educated twentysomethings who, unable to find jobs during the economic slump, leave the city behind for sustainable farms.

"[The films] all have to do with food, the importance of food in our everyday lives and getting back to locally grown," says Adam Jaschek, the Botanical Garden's events coordinator. "This film was actually suggested to us by Chipotle."

Though the filmmakers are Atlanta-based, the Botanical Garden plans to highlight GROW!'s ties to St. Louis. After the screening, Kelly Childs of Slow Foods St. Louis, a non-profit that promotes local and sustainable food, will speak about the film and organic foods. Someone from La Vista Farm in Godfrey, Illinois will also share their experience starting up a small farm.

GROW! is free to the public and starts July 11 at 7 p.m., followed by the local speakers. The next film, Cafeteria Man, screens August 8.
