The rumors are true: Church's Chicken on the corner of Skinker and Delmar boulevards is closed.
The "Church's" entrance logos are all down, and the restaurant floor is empty save for a few remaining stacks of chairs.
"This restaurant is permanently closed," read signs on the doors and drive-through window.
This morning, three men were emptying the restaurant of chairs and some grease-burned cooking supplies, and putting them in a van. (There was also a hearse there for some reason. R.I.P. Church's?) They claimed they were working for "the man who owns Blueberry Hill," but Joe Edwards -- Loop vanguard and Blueberry Hill propreitor -- left Gut Check a message last night saying he is not the building or property owner. He promised to get back to us with any intel on the new owner later this week.
Gut Check left a message with Church's Chicken corporate to see if they had more information.
In the meantime, please enjoy this photographic send-off to Church's, home to a shooting or two, many a well-loved greasy meal, and -- this morning -- where a man offered Gut Check "$200 to pose for photos."
Church's Chicken: Creepy to the bitter end. (For more fond and not-so-fond remembrances, check out this Reddit thread on the topic.)
