Strange Donuts, the independent doughnut shop slated to open at 2709 Sutton Boulevard in Maplewood this spring, turned to crowdfunding site Kickstarter to raise $10,000 toward the purchase of its kitchen equipment.
The restaurant reached its goal this week -- and, as of today, still has 12 days before the campaign ends.

"It's been tremendous," says Corey Smale, who has partnered with Tyler Fenwick to open Strange Donuts.
"We set our goal realistically," Smale continues. "We didn't ask for a great amount -- just enough for a very specifc thing, the kitchen.
"I think it's cool [by donating] people can help us with the actual process of making doughnuts."
While chatting with Gut Check, Smale also revealed a piece of news: Strange Donuts will open its doors on (when else?) National Doughnut Day, Friday, June 7.
Smale had originally hoped to be open by May. However, for those anticipating Strange Donuts' debut, he promises a reward for being patient.
"Be cool for a month," he says, "Everyone will get a free doughnut out first day."
