Your Fast-Food Lent Options Are Bountiful

The granddaddy of them all.
  • The granddaddy of them all.

The Lent season gives rise to a great St. Louis tradition, the Fish Fry. But local church parishes aren't the only folks in on the fish. At least since 1962, when McDonald's debuted the Filet-O-Fish, fast-food restaurants have offered Lent-friendly options for patrons.

Gut Check figured we'd run down the list in honor of the holiday.

McDonald's In addition to the classic Filet-O-Fish, McDonalds recently introduced Fish McBites. We'll let the mounted fish take it from here.

Meanwhile, a battle is brewing for the no.1 spot atop Premium Fish Sandwich Mountain: Burger King has trolled out its Premium Alaskan Fish Sandwich -- made with "cold water white fish fillet" (mmmmmmmm!) -- while Wendy's counters with a Premium Cod Fillet Sandwich -- made with...cod. Feel free to conduct your own taste test -- you can bet we will too.

Next: Hardee's, White Castle, and more... Hardee's The chain also known as Carl's Jr. has a fair amount of options suited to Lent duty. The Fish Supreme, a breaded-fish sandwich, will appeal to those who wish they were at McDonald's, while the Fish N Chips Basket will allow you to very unconvincingly pretend you're in Jolly Olde England. Gut Check, having tuned in to the Super Bowl, is going with the Cod Fish Sandwich.

(You're welcome.)

White Castle Home to tiny sliders and red-eyed college students, White Castle offers seafood options, from Fish Sliders to bite-size Fish Nibblers and Shrimp Nibblers.

Jack in the Box Nothing too extreme from Mr. Box, who offers a "Fish Sandwich." How about some fish tacos? Just throwing it out there, Jack.

IHOP The breakfast specialists dip into a Fish & Chips special. So, IHOP, when's that unlimited-pancake deal happening again?

And finally, a Reel Big Fillet, plus the other other white meat... Arby's Another fast-food chain emphasizing the "fresh" aspect during Lent. The place you go when the nearest Lion's Choice is farther than you care to drive has a Reel Big Fillet. (So punny!)

Church's Chicken Known for chicken, Church's isn't about to sit on the sidelines for 40 days and 40 nights. Restaurants have the Fish & Fries and Popcorn Shrimp & Fries. We're pretty sure you can still get chicken.
