Given the unseasonably warm weather we've been enjoying of late, it's hard to believe we're not already several weeks deep into farmers' market season.
In fact, that season gets going in earnest this very afternoon as the Schlafly Farmers' Market (a.k.a. the Maplewood Farmers' Market) opens at 4 p.m. in the parking lot of Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue, Maplewood; 314-241-2337).
What can you expect this first week? Let's consult the market's own Facebook page:
Lots of certified organic plant starts from Biver Farms, specialty produce from Earthdance Farms and YellowTree Farm, as well as the market debuts of Art House Coffees, Eckenfels Farms (grass-fed beef) and Windy Lake Farm (poultry and eggs).
That Facebook page also reveals at the final Schlafly winter market, held this past weekend, some early asparagus was available.
The market runs till 7 p.m., but market vets know that, especially at the beginning of the season, to get the best stuff -- not to mention the most convenient parking spaces -- you need to get there early.
