Eating tomato soup and grilled cheese in the winter months is a no-brainer -- in fact, Gut Check has been doing this for weeks despite the (until recently) unseasonably warm weather. But eating the sweet tomato bisque and grilled cheese at the Tin Can Tavern (3157 Morganford Road; 314-865-3003) is a completely different experience altogether.
This phenomenal bisque blends stewed tomatoes with sweet cream and numerous spices. A parsley garnish is the final accent. The result is intensely creamy with a touch of sweetness to it -- brown sugar? honey? -- which makes getting to the end of the cup a bittersweet affair indeed.
The grilled cheese is a perfect complement, the cheese gooey and greasy, truly the perfect dunking-complement to the bisque. So spend a chilly evening at the Tin Can Tavern and partake in this delightful meal. You can thank us later.
