You probably don't go into a Thai restaurant planning on ordering a barbecue dish, but Basil Spice (3183 South Grand Boulevard; 314-776-1530) makes the idea not only appealing but downright mouthwatering in the form of their #35 - Ba-Mee Mhoo Dang.

The Ba-Mee Mhoo Dang arrives at your table in the form of a bowl full of layered delicious ingredients. Soft egg noodles provide a cushion for fresh bean sprouts, green onions, lettuce and tender Thai-style barbecued pork. Crispy wontons finish off our favorite version of the dish. (You can also get it with cilantro, if you like.) But the real magic is in the sauce, which is assembled with fresh garlic, wine, vinegar and soy sauce. It tastes similar to a gentler sweet chili sauce, and it has perfect amount of sweetness to complement the barbecue pork's savory flavor.

Beginning last year, RFT restaurant critic Ian Froeb counted down -- in no particular order -- 100 of his favorite dishes in St. Louis. Now Gut Check has taken up where he left off. Check back frequently as we detail our 100 favorites, and don't hesitate to send us yours, too, either via the comments thread or at tips@riverfronttimes.com.
