The Place: The Wolf Public House (15480 Clayton Road, Suite 220, Ballwin; 636-527-7027), a locally owned restaurant and coffee shop located at the southwest corner of Clayton and Kehrs Mill roads. Serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The Lunch: Lone Wolf combination, with half sandwich and half salad, for $7.45. Served with a roll and butter or house-made Yukon Gold potato chips.
The Verdict: Lone Wolf Coffee Company is well off the beaten path. For foodies who live out west, though, the trek is one worth making. The restaurant's friendly atmosphere is homey -- photos of the owner biking, fishing and kayaking line the walls, and tables are intimately positioned throughout the interior. Old-fashioned wooden direction markers point you toward Graceland, the restroom and the counter.
After some deliberation, Gut Check ordered our Lone Wolf combo in the form of a Paradise Lake salad and a vegetable sandwich. Later we realized we could have gotten a whole sandwich and a small salad for only 50 cents more. (Note to gluttons: Live and learn.) The portion size was perfect, especially when accompanied by the house-made chips.
The salad comprised fresh mixed greens, walnuts, blue cheese, apples and a house-made maple vinaigrette. The dressing was sweet but light and didn't overwhelm the greens.
The sandwich was basic in its composition but piled high with avocado, fresh sprouts, lettuce, tomato, red onion and cucumber, served on multigrain bread. A layer of tarragon Dijon mustard and Gruyère cheese livened things up a bit, but the sandwich could have done with a little more in the way of, well, zest.
The Yukon Gold chips were a wonderful surprise: fresh, crisp and lightly salted, with a hint of barbecue sauce.
For less than $8, Lone Wolf serves fresh lunch entrées at an affordable price. Like the pix of the owner that line the walls, the food speaks of a healthy, active lifestyle. Lighter fare served in well-sized portions leaves you ready for your next adventure -- or the drive back to the office.
