PW Pizza (2017 Chouteau Avenue, 314-241-7799) is the latest eatery to grace the Lafayette Square neighborhood. It's also the newest venture by Paul and Wendy Hamilton, owners of Vin de Set and 1111 Mississippi.
We stopped by relatively late on a recent Friday night, but the restaurant was humming with activity nonetheless. Seated at a booth alongside an exposed-brick wall, we took note of the overall industrial feel of the pizzeria's décor: High ceilings, visible ductwork, exposed beams and murals featuring several St. Louis beers all added to the casual ambiance. The open kitchen is the star of the show; workers toss pizza dough into the air with bravado, and strategically placed mirrors emphasize all the action.
PW Pizza has only been open for a week or so, but based on how attentively and efficiently the restaurant operates, one would never know.
The waitstaff provided us with a beer menu that impressed with its thoughtful selection of over thirty bottles and six local beers on draft. Local items aren't emphasized only on PW Pizza's beer list; the restaurant also says they strive to source meats, cheeses and vegetables locally whenever possible.
Gut Check ordered a cup of the corn and chorizo chowder to start with, and though it wasn't piping hot, it was warm enough, came out quickly and had great flavor. Next, we decided to steer clear of the more eclectic offerings on the menu (Philly cheesesteak pizza topped with crème fraiche, anyone?) and sampled a classic margherita instead. It also came out of the kitchen in no time. Though we could have chosen a honey-wheat or gluten-free dough for our pizza, the house crust we chose was nicely done, perfectly thin and without too much char. Gut check was pleasantly surprised by the pie's spicy kick.
PW also serves up meatballs, salads, hot sandwiches and a particular featured pizza whose proceeds go toward Food Outreach of St. Louis. Pizzas range from $12 to $16, and the kitchen also has a vegan cheese available.
PW Pizza is open from 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
