For once, you'll be able to call an event a sausagefest, and it won't be an insult.

G&W Meat and Bavarian-Style Sausage is hosting the first-ever Southtown G&W Sausage Festival on Saturday, June 4th, from noon until 8 p.m. at Kingshighway and Beck (near Southtown Centre). The event benefits Southtown Improvement Corporation, a non-profit working to improve South City St. Louis.

A host of South City bars will have food - Southtown Pub, Bommar's Sports Bar and Grill, Sandrina's, The Famous Bar, Nellie Glenns Saloon, and The Haven. "The bars are trying to keep it a secret about what they'll have," said event communications director Demetrius Johnson.

Of course, there will be sausage samples. If that's not enough, vie for the title of Sausage King or Queen. It's not a beauty pageant; to win the crown, you've got to win the sausage-eating contest.

"Guys will eat sausages. Ladies will eat little weenies," said Johnson. Show up by 2 p.m. to register for the contests.

"There will be a washer tournament, sack races, sausage jousting and an awards ceremony," he added.

Bands and DJs, a sausage-cooking competition and a kids area round out the sausage fest.

"It's rather difficult to say sausage fest with a straight face," said Johnson, "but who doesn't like a good sausage every now and then?"
