Valentine's Day is this Monday, February 14. What's that? You haven't done your shopping yet? No worries. On this holiday, it's not the thought that counts -- it's the quality of the chocolate.
Gut Check checked in with a few of our favorite local chocolate makers to find out what's setting their customers hearts aflutter this year.
"For us, everything," jokes Kate Erker
, director of marketing and social media for Bissinger's
. "In our stores, we're seeing a lot of people gravitate toward our 'Sweetheart Collection.'"
The "Sweetheart Collection" is a 35-piece assortment of chocolate-covered goodies. Also popular this year, says Erker, is the "Fashionista Collection," chocolates served inside a replica of a red or leopard-print high-heel shoe.
Of course, Erker adds, "Everyone loves the heart-shaped box."
A call to a very busy Crown Candy Kitchen
reveals that chocolate-covered strawberries are among the most popular candies.

- Brian Pelletier, owner of Kakao Chocolate on South Jefferson and in Maplewood
At the new Maplewood location of Kakao Chocolate
, owner Brian Pelletier
says customers have fallen hard for the truffles made using spirits and vinegars from nearby Vom Fass
"Vom Fass has a treasure trove of ingredients," Pelletier says. "We have truffles that have orange liqueur, chili-fig balsamic vinegar, apricot grappa, hazelnut oil and honey balsmic vinegar.
"They're really incredible."
Bissinger's Erker notes that because Valentine's Day falls on a Monday this year, customers have the advantage of an entire weekend to shop.
In other words, last-minute lovebirds, you don't have any excuse for showing up empty-handed this Valentine's Day.
