The Joint: Mike Duffy's Pub & Grill - Richmond Heights 6662 Clayton Road, Richmond Heights; 314-644-3700

The Hours: Mon.-Fri. 3-6 p.m.

The Deal: $10 domestic bottle buckets, $3 wells and other nightly specials. $5 assorted appetizers and twelve-inch pizzas.

Today's etymology segment, after the jump...

The Scene: We're fairly certain the term "chillax" was coined in Mike Duffy's. Imagine a twentysomething dude moving back home and redecorating his childhood bedroom and you've got the décor of Duffy's. A toy train circles the bar, arcade games in the corner and neon beer signs to lighten things up. As far as the crowd goes, this Mike Duffy's outpost -- the original's in Kirkwood and there's another in Chesterfield -- tucked into an off-the-street shopping strip just east of the Schnucks near Big Bend and Clayton Road, attracts a working-class group that enjoys a cold brew and a round of virtual golf.

There's nothing out of the ordinary about the beers or the happy-hour hooch selection, but when it comes to the food, definitely try the cheese fries. When you see the tub o' waffle fries, shredded cheese melted into every nook and cranny, you'll swear you can't possibly polish off the order. And then you will proceed to polish off the order.

Why You'll Go Back: For the cheese fries. That and Duffy's Trivia Night, which transpires every Wednesday at 10 p.m. Even if you don't attend the trivia fest, you'll hear about it later at the bar.

The Verdict: Considering the reputation of Duffy's Trivia Night, the Happy Hour is surprisingly laidback. The servers are friendly and the food is decent, but unlike the weekly brain bash, this isn't the sort of thing you go out of your way to experience.
