Hammerstone's: Home of the Five-Hour Happy Hour!

  • Kristen Klempert

The Joint: Hammerstone's 2028 South Ninth Street; 314-772-5565

The Hours: Monday-Friday 2-7 p.m.

The Deal: 50 cents to $1 off all wells, drafts and bottled beers; select menu items discounted.

No, that's not a typo. You read right: Happy hour from 2 o'clock to seven o'clock, every single workday...

The Scene: With its random and multifarious adornments -- everything from assorted Cardinals propaganda to classic chandeliers -- Hammerstone's is nothing if not full of personality. There seems to be an unspoken dress code in the bar: All patrons must support at least one St. Louis team via T-shirt, headwear or both. Take this laidback atmosphere and add a hefty pour and it's no wonder Hammerstone's attracts so many proud St. Louisans. The happy hour menu includes your requisite cheesy, meaty and oh-so fabulously greasy foods -- pizzas, T-ravs, nachos and chili cheese fries -- that are perfect to share with friends.

Why You'll Go Back: Hammerstone's has two crucial factors working in its favor. First, the duration of happy hour here. Five frickin' hours! Second, a friendly and welcoming staff. The bartenders clearly feel at home, and they make it a point to ensure that you will too.

The Verdict: Let's see -- long happy hour, good eats, generous pours and easy on the wallet. If you're into simple, potent drinks, decent grub and a laidback and friendly vibe, you've found your bar. And if that kind of place doesn't float your boat, by all means steer clear and don't spoil it for the rest of us.
