Bad week for tuna lovers. On Sunday the New York Times Magazine ran a feature warning of the dwindling numbers of bluefin tuna, those big and tasty cash cows of the deep. Now the paper's Green blog brings word that saltwater fish are more apt than their freshwater cousins to cause mercury poisoning in humans: "Although seawater has lower concentrations of mercury than freshwater, mercury in seawater is more likely to stay in its toxic form, researchers report in a recent issue of Nature Geoscience."
Another nearly extinct species: The seltzer man. Toronto-based food writer Sarah Elton reports in the Atlantic. Elton also reports that seltzer used to be known as "Jewish Champagne." Who knew?
The hazards of celebrity chefdom: Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto sports a titanium plate in his right wrist -- the result of a hot-tub mishap, People magazine reports.
Meet your 2010 World Barista champion, Michael Phillips of Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea in Chicago. In the finals, Phillips beat out competitors from Guatemala, Australia, Ireland, Denmark and Greece. In April, Mike Marquard of Kaldi's fell to Phillips in the finals of the U.S. Barista Championship.
