A few weeks ago Gut Check got all picante-and-bothered when we heard brothers Adam and Jason Tilford's Milagro Modern Mexican in Webster Groves was soon to open. Well, we're just tickled rosada to tell you the restaurant opened today.
Why the joy? Well, let's just say it's not every day that a white-tablecloth ethnic restaurant opens in Webster Groves.
The margaritas are made with fresh limonada and agave nectar rather than
repugnant more traditional sour mix. The menu is extensive; highlights include queso fundido prepared with chorizo made in-house, tostaditas de pato that feature pulled duck meat in a blood orange-habanero sauce, and barbacoa de cordero -- lamb tips braised with avocado leaves, tomatoes, onions, cumin and oregano. Also of note, the made-from-scratch mole: smooth and sweet and spicy and nutty.
Finally, apropos of this morning's Morning Brew, gourmands and health-conscious alike can bond over huitlacoche, a fungus that grows on corn and has a long history in indigenous Mexican cuisine; on Milagro's menu it's featured along with wild mushrooms in quesadillas and enchiladas.
