With St. Louis' large Catholic population and history, fish fries are a big deal here during Lent. Catholics religiously abstain from meat each Friday and maybe not-so-religiously drink a few Bud Lights as well.
With this theme in mind, Gut Check is debuting a new occasional feature running down recent health department ratings of restaurants in the city of St. Louis and in St. Louis County. Anyone who's worked in a restaurant (present company included) knows that sometimes issues slip through the cracks. Judge for yourself by visiting for a bite to eat!
As you might have guessed by now, this week's theme is fish and a few randomly selected restaurants that serve it. The Ugly Fish - 4050 Bamberger
Congrats to the Ugly Fish in South St. Louis City for scoring a 95/100 on its most recent inspection. On the December 8 inspection, the restaurant was docked five points for a lack of a "thermometer in the pizza prep refrigeration unit" and for "wiping cloths on three compartment sinks."
