With St. Louis' large Catholic population and history, fish fries are a big deal here during Lent. Catholics religiously abstain from meat each Friday and maybe not-so-religiously drink a few Bud Lights as well.

With this theme in mind, Gut Check is debuting a new occasional feature running down recent health department ratings of restaurants in the city of St. Louis and in St. Louis County. Anyone who's worked in a restaurant (present company included) knows that sometimes issues slip through the cracks. Judge for yourself by visiting for a bite to eat!

As you might have guessed by now, this week's theme is fish and a few randomly selected restaurants that serve it.

The Ugly Fish - 4050 Bamberger
Congrats to the Ugly Fish in South St. Louis City for scoring a 95/100 on its most recent inspection. On the December 8 inspection, the restaurant was docked five points for a lack of a "thermometer in the pizza prep refrigeration unit" and for "wiping cloths on three compartment sinks." (read full report here.)

The Lucky Fish - 1401 Clark Street
This carry-out downtown restaurant also scored a 95/100 on its most recent, routine inspection on December 15. "CART HAS AN ACCUMULATION OF DUST BUILD-UP" reads the inspector's report, a first-time violation. The Lucky Fish was also docked three points for "NO TEST STRIPS PROVIDED. LOW CHLORINE PPM IN BUCKET AT STAND." (Read full report here.)

The Drunken Fish - 1 Maryland Plaza
This Central West End sushi restaurant and lounge has averaged a 91.2/100 score over the past three years by the Health Department. On the inspector's January 31 visit, the restaurant was docked five points for:
- "STORAGE SHELVES, BASEMENT STORAGE AREA, RUSTING BADLY" (3 points)
- "FLOOR, UNDER & ON SIDE OF EQUIPMENT NOT CLEAN TO WALL" (1 point)
- "WALL AT STAIRS TO BASEMENT & DISH AREA IN POOR REPAIR" (1 point)
Congratulations are in order here again, as the restaurant scored 95/100 on its most recent inspection, a marked improvement over its three-year average. (Read full report here.)

J J Fish N Chicken - 4337 Natural Bridge
This north St. Louis quick-serve restaurant has averaged an admirable 97.8/100 rating the past three years, and on the inspector's most recent follow-up visit on January 14, it earned a 98/100 score. The only critical violation was due to "Sewage & Waste Water Disposal," which luckily was resolved during the 25-minute inspection. (Read full report here.)

Potnar's Fish & Grill - 6841 Olive Boulevard
This restaurant in northwest St. Louis County near Herman Park scored a perfect 100/100 on its most recent routine inspection on September 24. Nice going! (Read the full report here.)
