We had more people attend our Dinner Club meeting at Yummies Restaurant than we've had in months. It could be the placement of the moon -- or it could be meatloaf. You wouldn't think that something as simple as meatloaf would have such a draw, but in a group where many of us live far from the comforts of Mom's kitchen, the appeal of simple home cooking can be huge.
Yummies excels at bringing the feel of family dining to a restaurant setting. If Mom were making banana pudding for dessert, you surely would have sneaked a small sample of that puddin'. That's not something you can typically do at a restaurant. At Yummies, though, the second we sat down, our server brought every one of us a small sample of the tasty dessert. Not only was that a brilliant sales idea, but it got people thinking "Yummie!" before they even ordered.
Order First = Served First
The ordering process even had a homestyle feel. When our server took our drink orders, he got all of our names. He called us by name to order our entrees: "Jan!" When Jan placed her order, a runner headed to a big steam table in the back and grabbed her food (picture Mom or Dad going to your kitchen to make you a plate). Jan had food in front of her before the next person finished ordering.
Here's an important lesson when dining at Yummies: If you're hungry and with a large group, volunteer to order first. (This assumes that you are with a group like ours where the policy is to throw protocol to the wind and start eating as soon as your plate arrives.)
The portions at Yummies are HUGE. However, unlike at your momma's, no one's standing over you, talking about starving children. In other words, you don't have to finish. Take some of your smothered pork steak, sweet potatoes, mac & cheese and green beans home and have a second meal.
What's a guy or gal who is watching their figure to do at Yummies? Stay home? There are some made-to-order items on the menu. One member ordered a turkey burger and a salad. Sadly, it wasn't nearly as yummie -- I have to keep using that word, sorry -- as everyone else's food (although I was told that the salad dressing was quite good).Turkey and Dressing or Fried Cat Nuggets?
Yummies' menu varies by day, so be sure to check the menu online and choose the day of your visit wisely; we're planning to head back on a Thursday to try the chicken & dumplings. When you call to make your reservation, try not to laugh when the phone is answered, "Thank you for calling Yummies, where everything is mmm mmm good," because you'll find that it's true.Stefani Pollack is the author of the food blogs Cupcake Project and Food Interviews.
