The Dish: Hardee's Western Thickburger

Today on the Daily RFT, my colleague Chad Garrison discussed the rather racy new Hardee's ad in which model and Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi expresses her love for Hardee's Western Thickburger. Here's the commercial, which aired many times during this past weekend's NCAA basketball action:

So is the Western Thickburger really so good that you want to lick dribbled sauce off your own calf?

I suppose, if you really, really love cheap, sweet and very, very mildly tangy barbecue sauce, then yes -- yes, you would want to lick it off your own calf. (Whether you would lick it off Ms. Lakshmi's calf I leave to your own imagination.)

What you see in that photo is pretty much what you get: Patty, cheese, bacon, diced onion, a couple of onion rings and barbecue sauce. Lots of barbecue sauce. I didn't taste much besides the sauce and the diced onion.

As for the burger itself...well, score another one for the marketing department. Is it bigger than your standard McDonald's or Burger King patty? Yes. Is it so much thicker to justify those ads where the Thickburger drops from above and lands with a resounding thwump? Nope.

Alas, I think Ms. Lakshmi is letting nostalgia cloud her judgment. Fair enough. We all have our vices. (Though if you ever see me licking part of a Chipotle burrito off my calf, please just shoot me dead then and there.)
