South City Walgreens Is Unloading Deep Discounts Today, Closing Tomorrow

Walgreens is the best store in the nation (sit down, Target, you aren’t ever open 24 hours a day), so every time a Walgreens location closes it feels like losing a friend.

The south city Walgreens at Kingshighway and Southwest (4925 Southwest Avenue; 314-773-5818) is closing tomorrow, so today is its last day in business. Which is very sad, of course, but also an occasion to celebrate because discounts, people!

When we stopped by this morning, the store wasn't even really picked over yet. The seasonal shelves in the center of the store are empty and some of the fancier cosmetics have already been packed up, but much of the remaining inventory is discounted, much of it up to 25 percent off.

The batteries, for example, are 25 percent off (score!) and much of the remaining snacks and candies are on sale, too. The big wall of cosmetics is still fully stocked (and not much is discounted there), but there must have been an awesome sale in the cold drinks section because it is almost entirely cleaned out.

The grocery section was still poppin’, but not much was discounted there. In fact, an employee said that Frito-Lay came and took out their inventory to be redistributed to somewhere else. (Why sell your stock at a discounted rate when you can sell it for full price elsewhere?)

The employee also said that if you have prescriptions at the Southwest location, they’ve been moved just down Kingshighway to the Walgreens at Arsenal (2933 S Kingshighway Boulevard, 314-773-2767). You know the one: It’s the location that once promised “2-for-1 Butt Fingerers.”

Oh! They still have Takis, though. Lots of Takis.
