Working Space

The interplay between our brains and eyes allows us to navigate a room that's cluttered without really thinking about how to do it -- we just step where the obstacles aren't. Speculative Spaces: Working Theses, the new group exhibition at at the Luminary (2701 Cherokee Street; www.theluminaryarts.com), forces us to actively address occupied space. Artists, architects and collectives, such as Jason Lazarus, High Desert Test Sites, Metahaven and Jesse Vogler, enact this mental adjustment by incorporating restrictions, rules and prompts in their work in the same way a sign that tells you not to walk on the grass makes you think about getting all up in that grass' business. Speculative Spaces opens with a free reception from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, June 27, and the show remains up through Friday, August 8. The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday, and admission is free.
