There was a time when portraiture was reserved only for the filthy rich and royalty. And then along came America, and anybody could get their portrait painted (U.S.A.! U.S.A.!) — well, anybody who actually existed in the real world. Those days are over, thanks to the annual Famous Fictional art show at Mad Art Gallery (2727 South Twelfth Street; 314-771-8230 or www.madart.com), in which artists are invited to create a portrait of their favorite made-up people and creatures. This year's installment, Famous Fictional Verses, features images of characters from the realm of poetry and song — that means you'll find your favorite nursery-rhyme personages as well as someone from the oeuvre of Iron Maiden (please, let it be Wrathchild). Famous Fictional Verses showcases work by Jenny Cimino, Peter Pranschke, Mardou, Anchovy and many other artists. The show opens with a public reception from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, November 5, at Mad Art Gallery (2727 South Twelfth Street; 314-771-8230 or www.madart.com). Admission is free, and the art remains on display through Saturday, November 27.
