Utz? Ha!

The realms of art and music intersect often, as Stephen Prina: Modern Movie Pop, the exhibition of art by the Red Krayola mainstay currently on display at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (3750 Washington Boulevard; 314- 535-4660 or www.contemporarystl.org), clearly demonstrates. But in addition to artists who produce music (David Bowie, Kurt Cobain) and musicians who make art (Gibby Haynes, Angus Young), there are those strange hybrids who are difficult to classify, such as Matthew Barney and his Cremaster Cycle, which melds equal measures of music and art to create something new. Tonight at 7 p.m. at the Contemporary, museum director Paul Ha and reliquary of secret musical knowledge Jim Utz discuss the beautiful union of Art and Music in the '90s. This was the decade of DIY and band flyer as artistic statement; the last gasp of a pre-Internet/pre-digital world struggling to come to grips with cheap printing and easily made music while trying to remain true to the scene, the streets and their musical influences. It was a glorious din, a visual mess and a very fertile time for both creative fields. Admission is free, and feel free to pepper Utz with musical trivia; he knows almost everything.
