The Doctor Is In

Toshiro Mifune and Akira Kurosawa worked together for the last time on Red Beard, which stars Mifune as the titular bearded character, Dr. Kyojo Niide. Dr. Niide runs a clinic in an impoverished quarter of Edo with stern efficiency. The foreign-trained Dr. Noboru Yasumoto arrives with a massive chip on his shoulder and grandiose plans of ascending to the role of personal physician to the Shogun, and is horrified at the working conditions. Dr. Niide refuses to go easy on the younger man, assigning the fussy young man to tend to the most miserable patients, and with good reason. Exposed for the first time to the horrors and cruelties of the world, Dr. Yasumoto at last learns compassion to go along with his medical knowledge. Red Beard screens at 7:30 p.m. at Webster University's Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries). Tickets are $5 to $6.
