With a soundtrack featuring tunes from Cheap Trick, Debbie Harry, Lou Reed and Iggy Pop, the 1983 Canadian animated film Rock and Rule was all but guaranteed cult status, and its allure skyrocketed when it failed to find a theatrical release in North America. For years information on the film was scarce -- bootleg VHS copies found their way to comic-book conventions, erroneously credited to Fritz The Cat director Ralph Bakshi. The veil of secrecy surrounding the film finally lifted when it hit cable television and became a late-night staple. In Rock and Rule a ragtag band's frontwoman is kidnapped by a past-his-prime rock star who intends to use her unique talents to summon a demon, stage a comeback and ensure his immortality.
