Muny's 92nd season opens with Beauty and the Beast

Featured Review: Beauty and the Beast Five summers ago when the Muny opened its season with this celebrated Disney musical about unexpected love in hairy places, it was hot as blazes. You had to feel sorry for the poor actors under all those heavy costumes. Now here we are again — another opening, another Beast — and once again it's too darn hot. But, as he did five years ago, James Clow's Beast seems oblivious to the humid hardships of a St. Louis summer. Clow delivers a poignant performance as the beastly prince who learns to love both books and women at the same time. He is charmingly matched with Sarah Darling, whose beauteous Belle is full of spunk and sensitivity. Among the many cartoonish characters that populate the Beast's castle, Leslie Denniston's Mrs. Potts sings the title song with a warm smile in her voice. The Muny's 92nd season is off to a sizzling start. Through June 30 at the Muny in Forest Park. In addition to the free seats, tickets are $9 to $66. Call 314-361-1900 or visit www.muny.org.
