Hot Pumpkins!

Every month Third Degree Glass Factory hosts a free open house at which glass blowers demonstrate their skills, artists show their work in the gallery and a live band plays. It's free and it's fun. October's event is traditionally overblown because this month marks the glass studios anniversary -- and this year Third Degree takes it up to eleven. Tonight from 6 to 10 p.m. it's on like a glass Donkey Kong. The glassblowers start by competing in the pumpkin death match; this requires them to create glass pumpkins for the audience's pleasure. If you're not pleased, the red-hot gourds are dropped in water, which causes immediate, explosive death. That's followed by a novel popcorn-serving method: Popcorn is poured into a just-crafted, still-hot glass bowl and then physics does the rest. The evening's soundtrack is provided by Sarah Jane and the Blue Notes, and the Fire Technicians performance troupe has a little something planned that was inspired by Michael Jackson's "Thriller." It's gonna be quite the scorcher of an evening. Third Degree is located at 5200 Delmar Boulevard; call 314-367-4527 or visit www.stlglass.com for more information.
