Help Build The 'House

St. Louis is a highly literate community that loves its local independent bookstores, and many natives harbor a special fondness for, and loyalty to, the Book House. This indie stalwart has been a bastion for the physical book since 1986 but recently suffered a major blow: It lost its one-of-a-kind storefront, the charming old two-story frame house in Rock Hill that's beguiled legions of browsers for years. The good news is the Book House is moving to a space in downtown Maplewood, but this new home needs a lot of costly work done on it. Here's where you come in. Attend Locally Grown Literature tonight at the Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue, Maplewood) and you'll do your part to aid this important hometown cause. The 8 p.m. event is a fundraiser for the new-era Book House; a modest $15 admission nets you two Schlafly craft beers and readings from featured authors such as regional lit luminaries Scott "Wichita Lineman" Phillips, William Stage, Robin Tidwell and Julie Dubray, plus others.
