Fear or Faith?

The final show in Opera Theatre of Saint Louis' 2014 season is Francis Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites. The sisters of a Carmelite convent must deal not only with the great terror of the French Revolution, but also the question of faith: Will they renounce their vows in order to save themselves from the guillotine, or will they embrace martyrdom? Dialogues is always a haunting experience, but OTSL's production has an edge over most: Powerhouse soprano Kelly Kaduce plays the role of the timid neophyte Blanche, and St. Louis favorite Christine Brewer is Mme. Lidoine, the new prioress. It should be a corker. Dialogues of the Carmelites opens at 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at the Loretto-Hilton Center on Webster University's campus (130 Edgar Road; 314-961-0644 or www.opera-stl.org). Tickets are $55 to $130. Dialogues is performed four more times in repertory through Saturday, June 28.
