With a simple, sinister walking bass line and percussive stabs on the upper register, Booker T. and the MGs' "Green Onions" remains the gold standard for instrumental organ soul. As the backing band for Stax Records, Booker T. Jones and his bandmates played on a number of unbreakable Memphis soul tracks and helped popularize the city's pulsing grooves. In the years since the MGs split, Jones went on to produce albums for Bill Withers and Willie Nelson; his 2009 album Potato Hole was another step outside the B3-powered tunes that made him famous. Produced by Patterson Hood and featuring contributions from the Drive-By Truckers and Neil Young, the disc features plenty of ragged electric guitar (compliments of Booker himself) and a few choice covers. Booker T. comes to town as part of the fifteenth edition of the Big Muddy Blues Festival.
