Bach and Roll

Jan 24, 2013 at 4:00 am
Any Beatles fan worth their three-quarter boots knows that the band was influenced by a host of music and musicians, among them many luminaries of classical music. For example, the melody of "Blackbird" was inspired by Bach's Bourree in E Minor, and Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 inspired the use of a piccolo trumpet in "Penny Lane"; not to the mention the huge influence of Bach (Barbara, his wife) on Ringo's life. Bach to the Beatles is a special musical venture featuring violinist David Halen and other members of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra joining forces with Beatles tribute band Flaming Pie, to explore how and where classical elements show up in the music of the Fab Four. The performance takes place tonight at 8 p.m. at the Sheldon Concert Hall (3648 Washington Boulevard; 314-533-9900 or www.thesheldon.org). Admission is $15 to $30.
