A Cracking Spectacle

Dec 1, 2011 at 4:00 am
For fans of The Nutcracker, this is a heady time of year. Tchaikovsky's ballet is never performed in July, after all -- December is the month for Nutcrackers of all shapes and sizes. If there's a crown jewel for your collection, it's most likely the George Balanchine version. The big daddy of all productions, Balanchine's grandiose staging captured the childlike, dreamy qualities of the story, and sparked the great Nutcracker wave that swept the nation in 1954, and still shows no signs of abating. Witness the magic once again as the New York City Ballet simulcasts tonight's performance of George Balanchine's Nutcracker live from Lincoln Center. The performance takes place at 5 p.m. locally, and you can see it onscreen at the Regal St. Louis Mills Stadium 18 (5555 St. Louis Mills Boulevard, Hazelwood; www.fathomevents.com). Tickets are $16 to $20.
